3-topgallant-sail-schooer „Santa Barbara Anna“
at the city harbour Rostock
With proud the traditional ship „Santa Barbara Anna“, which was built as a diesel trawler in the English Richard Iron Works Lowestoft ship yard in 1951, is presenting itself. The Sail visitors wondered, they wondered once more as they read the name of the owner: Joey Kelly. You know him? Yes, it was the front singer of the Kelly-Family, the extreme runner and Iron-Man of Hawaii. „Absolutely right“, Günther Schmidt, member of the crew, said and provided fun to the querying people. Navigator Nobert Persigehl pointed out that the ship is under leadership of a club which is still looking for new members who like to join the all season work. For those who are interested in taking part for trips to Halmstadt, Heringsdorf for the Kaisertagen or at the Kieler Woche, „our skipper Gerd Düffer is the contact person“.
Bridal couple at mooring 92
During the nice sunshine the Hanse Sail 2008 has its own private fortune. Natalie and Andreas Kuhblank, who married in the nearby register office, thought it would be absolutely suitably and solemnly to have a photo session on the traditional sailer „Lisa von Lübeck“ at mooring 92. „That was a great idea and everything worked“, the red dressed bride said with a thankful look to the groom. It was also a brilliant idea of Klaus Schach to took a sprightly group of seniors from Berlin, at 6.00 o’clock in the morning, to the Hanse Sail and directly on board of the „Pirola“ for a five hour sailing trip. „Wonderful“, Heidrun Arendt adored, „the weather was great, the gastronomic support marvellous“ and the husband, Reinhard, completed: „so we have to win Mr. Schach for a retry next year.“
Bernt Lüchtenborg –
from Cuxhafen two times around the world to Rostock
On Thursday the expedition ship “SY Horizons” arrived at the City harbour of Rostock. The circumnavigator Bernt Lüchtenborg came to Rostock to present his new project “sail2horizons”. He plans a double circumnavigation and hopes to catch the public’s attention. For him “sail2horizons” is not only a sportive challenge but first of all a project to call attention to dramatic changes of the climate as well as giving unpriviledged children and teenagers better prospects. Lüchtenborg is looking forward to Rostock: “The organizers of the Hanse Sail give me the possibility to present my project to a broad public. Maybe the double circumstance ends in 2010 at the Hanse Sail.” Next to several press conferences and sailing trips with children, Bernt Lüchtenborg will head the squadron trip to Warnemuende on Sunday.
Couch in the water and blue lights in front of ferries
and cargo ships
Since Thursday, 30 officers and 13 boats of the water guard arrived at the Warnow and the Baltic Sea in the occasion of the 18th Hanse Sail Rostock. Helmhard Lakomy, chief inspector of the police and manager of the water guards Rostock, says: “We placed all of our boats between the moles of Warnemuende and the lock at the Mühlendamm as well as at the Sea area between Kühlungsborn and Darßer Ort.” Furthermore: “We get support by colleagues from Sassnitz and Wismar. Five fast rubber boats accompany the professional navigation at the sea channel. In front of each ferry and freighter a policeman guides the ships together with blue light. “This increases the security enormously”, said Lakomy, who already experienced 17 meetings of windjammers. Quaint happenings will also become unforgettable memories of the annalists: “A couch swims at the Warnow”, has been an information for the men who guard and guide the event.
Regatta of traditional sailing ships sails into North
Today from 12.00 a.m. the regatta of traditional sailing ships starts west of the lighthouse of Warnemuende. “A storm force of five is prognosticated. That means, the trip goes five miles into the north until the orange buoy and back” says the manager of the regatta Uwe Jahnke. The latest course will be fixed in the early morning at the meeting of mates. The ships will start according to their size and type in four different categories: square rigged traditional ships, schooners and galleasses, 1-masts or yachts. Three Dutch ships have already signed in the regatta: The clipper “Stad Amsterdam” (76 metres), the barkentine “Thalassa” (47 metres), the clipper “Stella Maris” (32 metres) and the Swedish brigantine “Baltic Beauty”, which is one of the fastest sailing ships of the regatta.
In Rostock as fast as never been before:
the wind set on the „V Symphony“
That fast Wim Spaargaren has never been to Rostock: from Karlskrona across the Baltic Sea in only 27 hours. The other years the 68 year old skipper from the Netherlands needed seven to ten hours more. Tuesday evening he started from the south Swedish port and finished the distance of the Hiortenregatta 2008 by one step. The right wind from northwest and southeast drove the „V Symphony“ to the Sail in Rostock for the 5th time. With a heavy occupational accident he lost half of his legs 30 years ago, arduously he learnt walking again and taught himself the sailing basics on a „Laser”. He has all important boating certificates and by now the needed experience not to finish all regattas with his „V Symphony“ as the rear light. His nearly 50 years old ship the metal worker made seaworthy by himself.
Sail blasts: 9th meeting of cannonneers and bangers at Rostock
The cannon’s bivouac on August, 9th and 10th at the waterside of Gehlsdorf became a national meeting of traditional associations with cannons and uniforms and means even in quiet conditions a highlight. 21 associations and banger groups with 120 cannoneers from all over Germany participate in this meeting. 36 cannons including the biggest cannon which belongs to the shooting club Bremen and has a bore of 150 millimetres, are going to underline the 18th Hanse Sail in their traditional way by bangers and salutes. “Even a ship naming ceremony will happe this year”, says Manfred König, gunner of the rifleman association “Concordia”. “Up to now one cannon of the gun club Hitzacker at the Elbe river is unnamed”. An extra banger is expected: The biggest gun club of Rostock which has 167 members is the “Concordia von 1848 e.V.” and celebrates its 160th anniversary. Happy Birthday!
Sailing trip of the Gorch Fock:
prominent attendance on the „old dame“
At the Hanse Sail for the German navy the focus of today is on the „Gorch Fock“ again. Exactly at 10.30 a.m. the motto is „Leinen los“ for the sailing trip of the sailing training ship of the German navy. Prominent attendance is on board. Other than invited guests the minister of defence, Dr. Franz Josef Jung, honoured by the invitation of the inspector of navy, vice-admiral Wolfgang Nolting, the „old dame“ of the navy which celebrates its 50th birthday this year. Already the jubilee of the „Gorch Fock“ on Thursday with an ceremonial presentation of the 10-Euro-medal and a special issue stamps as well as the vespertine reception have been the focus. At the sailing trip the crew can show their seaman’s handcraft today, in the sea area in front of Warnemuende. The end of the day is formed by the NDR-Nordmagazin, which has a live programme at 7.30 p.m. on board of the birthday child and therefore sets the medial peak of the celebration.
Dragon boats at the City harbour
Today from 2.00 p.m. visitors will experience a different kind of tug-of-wars. Five teams of the SV Breitling Rostock are going to compete on board of a dragon boat. Two teams of eight persons take a seat in the boat by looking into opposing directions. An energetic rowing will begin when the starter’s gun shot. Each team tries to move the boat into its direction. The team which moved the boat over a distance of two metres to its side will win the match. The members have to be as strong as dragons to win the competition. However the traditional paddle boats are not named after this. Because China is the place of origin, the boats’ stem posts and stern posts are decorated with the boat’s eponyms – artistic graven dragon heads and tails.
A blaze of colours and sounds at the IGA Park
In the evening of August, 8th the Symphonic Pop Orchestra, under the leading of Frank Hollmann, presented the ad hoc produced program „Colours of the Wind“ at the IGA Park. More than 90 artists of singers, dancers and instrumentalists, triggered off a firework of melodies. The audience was delighted with the fulminate show. Within the title-giving „Colours of the Wind“, from the Disney film „Pocahontas“, a real crawlies atmosphere arouse. The dancers with their colourful costumes were particularly impressing. Accompanied by an electrical violin they presented Irish dances. One more highlight has been the powerful-voiced gospel choir, who could have developed its whole power with the song „Shadowland“. That evening will treasure for a long time.
Emotions are male – the concerts on Saturday evening
There used to be humans who come to the Hanse Sail only because of the evening events. In addition they have enough reasons, because the concerts on the big stages of the Sail are worth seeing. On the stage Hanse Sail Peter Schilling will play from 9.45 p.m. Here his well known hits of the 80s will also be heard like his songs from his 2007 album „emotions are male“. It remains masculine emotional on stage Antenne MV. Here Haddaway will give an answer of the question „What is Love?“ at 8.45 p.m. Later that evening the man of the men and self made „King of Mallorca“ performs at 11.00 p.m. The male music events will be completed by the synthie-pop-band Alphaville on the stage NDR presented by NDR 1 Radio MV on Saturday evening. At the stage LOHRO as usual the younger guests will be in good spirits. At 6.00 p.m. groups like Dritte Wahl, Coogan’s Bluff, Les Bummms Boys and many more will be performing before the „Indie Night“ starts in the Mau-Club.

The changeful relations of the Latvians and Germans
The Germans shaped Latvia, but also domineered over it – that shouldn’t be forgotten, by thinking about the changeful relation of the Latvians and the Germans. Among the most pleasing and most productive years of partnership relations belong those of the 50's-years of the 20th Century. Riga and Rostock concluded a partnership between the cities in October 1961. Up to present Ventspils and Liepaja were ports of call of the trading vessels registered in Rostock. Since 1994 an honorary consul for Latvia resides in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. At present projects like the “Baltic-Plasma-Tec “or the projection of a complete installation in the port of Riga by the Rostockian Inros Lackner AG are important projects of co-operation. In an closely connection are also community enterprises of the Plasma-Technology, the universities, high and technical schools of both countries as well as the enterprises, schools and different cultural facilities.
Preview of Sunday
On Sunday the City harbour attracts the visitor’s attention: From 3.30 p.m. eights of the Rostocker Ruderclub, the Olympia Ruderclub Kessin and the Hochschulsportgemeinschaft Rostock compete at the “Hanse Sail eight”. Together with winners of further regattas, the winners will arrive at the stage Hanse Sail from 6.00 p.m. A special highlight for aesthetes will be the election of the Miss Hanse Sail 2008, which starts at the stage Hanse Sail from 3.00 p.m. The crew of the naval training ship “Gorch Fock” will welcome guests from 10.00 a.m. to participate in an oecumenic service at Warnemuende, while the churches of Warnemuende offer a sailor’s service at the same time.
The weather
It still makes us not really happy: the weather. A low over the southern Norwegian Sea moves east northeast to the Hanse Sail and applies a melange of changing cloudiness and low to strong showers.
