Polish Sailing training ship “Iskra“ participates at
the Hanse Sail for the first time
The news are very recent: The sailing training ship of the Polish marine, the barquentine “Iskra” takes part at the Hanse Sail Rostock 2007. This means the third Polish ship which visits the Warnow.

Next to the full rigged ship “Dar Mlodziezy”, the sailing training ship of the “Höhere Seefahrtsschule Gdynia”, the beautiful brig “Fryderyk Chopin” will participate. With a length of 50 metres and a canvas of 1035 square metres, the “Iskra” belongs to the biggest sailing ships of this year’s meeting of the windjammers.

18 crewmembers and 45 mate followers work on board. The barquentine “Iskra” was built in 1982 in Gdansk next to two other ships which were constructed in the same way. For example the sailing training ship “Kaliakra” which belongs to the Bulgarian marine and the Polish research ship “Pogoria”. The designer of this construction line is Zdislaw Choren, who also designed the construction plans of “Dar Mlodziezy” and “Fryderyk Chopin”.

Today’s ”Iskra” got its name from a three-master schooner which was built in 1917 in the Netherlands and which was used by the Polish marine for the seamanly education of young mates in the whole wide world. At the beginning of World War II the ship as well as the crew took up a subordinated role to the Royal Navy, which assigned the ship after a dispute of several years back to the Polish navy. Before the fall of the German Wall the “Iskra” visited Rostock in the context of navigation teaching trips.

Rostock at the Baltic Sail Halmstad

Rostock and Halmstad are connected with each other by a cooperation of both country’s seaports and a joint support of traditional sailing.

There is free place left in front of the mast
Yet 70 of nearly 230 registered participating ships at the 17th Hanse Sail 2007 offer the possibility to sail with them during the day or in the evening. For example the three-mast schooner “Eendracht“ and „Ingo“, the three-mast gaff schooner “Linden”, even at the favoured weekend.

The Polish full rigged ship “Dar Mlodziezy” welcomes its guest on Thursday (August, 9th) on board. To sail at the Hanse Sail is always a popular event for the visitors of Rostock’s meeting of windjammers.

Many companies benefit from the Hanse Sail to socialise with old and new partners. Until now about 70 companies booked sailing trips for their employees or partners. Also birthdays or weddings offer a good possibility for sailing trips as a special present.
