Maple leafs on the square sail of the “Concordia”
A tall ship from Canada is going to participate in the 17th Hanse Sail for the first time, the barquentine “Concordia”. Although it is under Bahamian flag, its square sails decorated with maple leafs indicate the Canadian home of the sailing ship.
The ship which has a length of 58,50 m (9,44 m breadth, 4,2 m draught) and a sail of 900 square metres sails as a Charter of the private US American-Canadian navigation school “West Island Collage International“ (Lunenburg/ Nova Scotia). The crew consists of 48 chosen members of the school next to regular members and teachers, all in all 66 persons.
In the context of an international youth exchange with the Polish brig “Fryderyk Chopin” the tall ship is on a world tour which first break will be the Tall Ship Race at Szczecin. After the race both ships sail to Rostock. With the participation of the “Concordia” 15 tall ships with a length of more than 50 metres take part in the Hanse Sail, a number which has never been reached before.
Exhibition of navy planes at the Baltic Point
The ejection seat of a jet, original dresses of pilots of sea planes and 20 models of ships and planes: The exhibition of “Sea and Navy Planes - Yesterday - Today - Tomorrow” is a new attraction at the Baltic Point at the passenger’s quay at Warnemünde.
This presentation shows the development of the marine aviation from its beginning until now. It starts with the formation of the first German department of naval aviation on device of the German emperor of May, 3rd 1913. In the 50ies the building of the German naval aviation increased again while the development in the GDR began 10 years later. These historical facts are presented at the Baltic Point by 30 different text and picture boards next to about 100 photos and models and exhibits of naval life.
An outstanding exhibit is the “Seafalcon”, a ground effect car made by Meerestechnik Engineering GmbH with a wingspan of about 3 metres. The presentation shows all in all precious loans of naval museum Dänholm (Stralsund), the naval aviation museum Nordholz (Niedersachsen) as well as loans of other institutions and private collectors.
The exhibition is conceived and worked out by a project group at the Bureau Hanse Sail in cooperation with the Marineamt Rostock. It can be visited every day until September, 15th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
HONDA supports Hanse Sail for the first time
The 17th Hanse Sail of Rostock works with the support of HONDA and Autohaus Krüll Rostock. In front of the ships located at the city harbour the office manager Rüdiger Reuschel handed the first car out to Holger Bellgardt the manager of the Bureau Hanse Sail.
The passenger cars can be used by the Bureau Hanse Sail of the Tourismuszentrale Rostock & Warnemünde for the preparation and while the meeting of the windjammers. They can be used as a Shuttle and during the presentation of Rostock at the Tall Ship Race’s port of destination at Szczecin (August, 4th – 7th).
Entrepreneurs of Rostock and Szczecin start their sailing trips on board of the windjammers “Dar Mlodziezy” and “Greif” on August, 7th to the Hanse Sail Rostock. This trip is also supported by the Krüll GmbH Rostock.
