Arrival of “Hans-Albers’ ship”. Reunion with the “Kruzenshtern”
It’s second of the world’s tallest ships: After the “Sedov” the Russian “Kruzenshtern” is the second largest and still active windjammer with a length of 114,4 metres and with an interesting history. At the 18th Hanse Sail from August, 7th to 10th 2008 the four-mast barque will be the tallest sailing ship in every dimension, too. Even the main mast has a height of 54 metres which is higher than most of the steeples of the small towns of Mecklenburg- Western Pomerania.

The ship which is today an education ship of prospective mates of the Russian trade navigation was launched by order of Hamburg’s shipping company F. Laeisz in 1926 at the Tecklenburg shipyard at Wesermünde under the name “Padua”. Being a fast cargo ship, the “Padua” sailed across the world and carried salpeter from Chile as well as Australian wheat for several years. However the ship became famous by Hans Albers in the movie “große Freiheit Nr. 7”.

The “Kruzenshtern” visited Rostock 13 times, in occasion of the Hanse Sail but also out of it. In this year the tall ship which is registered in Kaliningrad is going to cast off five times during the days of the Hanse Sail. Several enterprises of our federal state chartered the ship which won the Columbus regatta to New York in 1992 by a personal speed record of 19 bends, to enjoy the Hanse Sail by a sailing trip with business partners and colleagues. If the Danish schooner “Aron” lies next to the “Kruzenshtern”, this meeting will picture the tale of “Gulliver in the land of dwarfs”. The Danish participants sail under a sail area of barely 10 square metres while the enormous old timer holds 34 sails with a total of 3400 square metres of area.

“Aviation is developing …” – also at the 18th Hanse Sail
Water planes of the 8th meeting of sea planes are going to complete the parade of the windjammers at the Hanse Sail from August, 7th to 10th 2008 in a spectacular way.

Planes and also a flying boat from Sweden, Austria and Germany will be expected. Once again a helicopter will take off and land at the sea base at the Fracht- und Fischereihafen Marienehe. Visitors of the 18th Hanse Sail who want to enjoy a flight are invited to go on board of the water planes as well as of the helicopter.

Viewing Rostock from on high means an unforgettable impression starting with the white sand of the beach to the green forests and meadows of the Hanseatic city between Baltic Sea and Warnow. Such a flying trip will take about 30 minutes. In 2007 about 600 guests of the meeting of the sea planes took the opportunity to follow the motto “fly away”.
