Welcome with or without sails
More than 20 ships will not set sails at the 17th Hanse Sail: passenger ships, luggers, pilot cutters, barges and most of all “the hunk”. This 74 year old steam icebreaker called “Stettin” never missed a Sail. The light vessel “Fehmarnbelt” will also take part at the Sail in 2007, as well as the German navy and their fast and tall ships made of steel. The biggest fighting ship of the German navy the frigate “Hamburg” ties up at Warnemünde. Speedboats as well as other ships can be visited at the city harbour and at the navy base Hohe Düne.

For the first time five passenger ships from Germany and Denmark will ply next to excursion boats from Rostock during the Hanse Sail at the Warnow. Some of those will be the Danish veteran ship “Nordlyset II“ of 1984 as well as the saloon steamer “Stadt Kiel” (1934), the paddle wheel steamer “River Star” from Darß and finally the “Ostseebad Prerow”.

The side-wheeler from the Island Sylt which had been keeled down in 1905 and rebuilt in 2002 will arrive at Rostock one more time. The former pilot cutters “Marxen” and “Küstennebel” will be motor vehicles next to the former coast boat “Elbe 1” and the “Vagel Grip” which was last-mentioned as “Schiff der Jungen Matrosen”. The smallest participant of the Hanse Sail with a length of only 4,20 metres will be the solar boat “Sonni” with its seminal engine.

A maritime “Lada”
The “Lada”, a Russian car from Togliatti at the Wolga had been a famous brand in the GDR. It got its name from a ship’s type which once ran at the Wolga, the Caspian Sea and other Russian inland waterways. This stylized ship with a square sail became the company logo of the homonymous car.

Next to single-masted sailing boats there were also “Lodjas” (ladas) with two masts and three masts. One of those three-mast sailing boats is the “Sankt Peter” – a remake of a ship which probably existed at the time of Ivan the Terrible. This ship takes part in the Hanse Sail for the first time. It has been built in 2002 at Petrosawodsk at the Ladoga with a total length of 21 metres, a breadth of 5,20 metres and a draught of 1,70 metres. The sail is about 220 square metres. “Sankt Peter” got its name not of a saint but of the Metropolitan of Moscow.

Two Lithuanians at Rostock
For the first time two ships from Lithuania are going to participate in the Hanse Sail. The schooner “Brabander” which was built in 1977 with a length of 36,20 metres and a sail of 540 square metres is one of the medium-sized sailing ships at the meeting of the windjammers in 2007. Meanwhile the “Osedeja” applied for the Hanse Sail. This Bermuda schooner with a sail of 110 square metres and a length of 14 metres has been built in 1985 and belongs to the University of Klaipeda.
