GREIF First Ship Home at HIORTEN-regatta
On Sunday Dr. Dieter Goldschmidt and Per Inge Lindquist sent 21 traditional sailing vessels and yachts in sunny weather to the HIORTEN regatta. Dazzling sunshine and 4-5 Beaufort made the regatta from the south Swedish Karlskrona to Rostock to a comfortable and fast trip. The GREIF from Greifswald was First Ship Home after only 25 hours and 28 minutes. The 41 m long schooner brig crossed the finishing line off Warnemünde on Monday evening at 17.28. Second in the group of the big traditional sailing vessels (length: 34 to 50 m) was LADY ELLEN from Sweden before the KUBLAI'S KAHN ll, the Asian junk of the adventurers Axel Brümmer and Peter Glöckner, crossed the target line. Goldschmidt, leader of the race, reported: “The regatta was very relaxed. Except the KUBLAI'S KAHN ll, whose mast broached two times, there were no further problems. It was especially exciting in the group of the yachts: Here the paritcipants provided a neck-and-neck race that the Russian KARAVELLA could decide in favour of herself at 23.50 in the night between Monday and Tuesday. The ship won 25 minutes before the AQUARIUS that also comes from Russia crossed the line. THE 5th SYMPHONY from the Netherlands arrived the finishing line nine minutes after the AQUARIUS. The winner in the group of the small traditional sailing vessels (length: 15 to 30 m) was the GREIF v. ÜCKERMÜNDE that won before the second PRESVIATA POKROVA from the Ukraine that crossed the line nine hours later. The award ceremony for the participants of the HIORTEN regatta will take place in the framework of the captain’s reception on the donkey court in Schlage on Wednesday evening. The “pirate’s river” at the river Warnow
"We take about 900 passengers on our pirate’s river in one hour“, says showman August Schneider (42) from Münster (Westfalen) without losing sight of his eight guys. They built up the white-water ride in the city harbour with heavy crane technics. 150 tons equipment float from trucks and luggage vans: ten tree trunk boats and life-size figures of pirates. One of the raparees is the “Grüßaugust” (welcoming clown) who attracts the visitors with a synchronous voice at the entrance of the wet pleasure in driving with the help of amused cries of joy and splashing bow waves. 120.000 l water from the harbour hydrants form the waterbed for the “gondolas” of the ride that was built in France. August Schneider in person takes on the „easy splash shower” before his “pirate’s river” get the flowing. Anyway, every showman gives top priority to a test drive before the big folk festival starts – that is tradition with the “driving people”.
