Sail-afterthoughts

The 21. Hanse Sail: successful and peaceful
On the final day of Rostock’d maritime event Rostock’s mayor Roland Methling is pleased the ‘the 21. Hanse Sail was not rain-soaked after the first both days and not only actors but also visitors kept their good mood. A reward was the fantastic sunny Sail-Saturday, which let to an attractive regatta of traditional sailing ship off Warnemünde. Holger Bellgardt, head of the Hanse Sail Office, is satisfied after the work intensive days of the year. ‘On Saturday, that is the highlight of the Sail-days, there was a successful ‘conquest’ of the city harbour and Warnemünde by inhabitants and guests. As one of the Saturdays with the highest number of visitors in the history of the maritime event, we and our partners were rewarded for the whole year’s efforts: our varied offers were adopted. In particular it concerns the fantastic fleet of traditional sailing ships with over a dozen of windjammers or the ‘Bounty’ as a ‘star’. It concerns also the premium class rides or for the sporty activities in the sailing stadium by top athletes. My thanks go to my team and to the growing number of partners, year by year. Together with them, we will analyze the 21. Sail and think about improvements, e.g. in the event logistics. The joy about a succeeded, friendly and peacefully Sail will motivate us.

The uniting football match with fun
The heart of the football tournament, Gerhard Wendt is full of joy. The crew of the ‘Mir I (Russia)’ won the tournament. In its group, they prevailed with 12:0 goals. In the final game, they played only 0:0 against the winner of the 2. Group: ‘Gorch Fock I’. They won the following 7-m-shooting with 2:1 and were happy about the winning of the Cup 2011. They thank the organizers of SV Eintracht Rostock and the hall staff with Gerda Fahning and Heinz Ruck, because they ensure great conditions. By the way: the Cup-defender, the Russian ‘Sedov’ won in the fight for the third place the II teams of the ‘Mir’ and guaranteed a Russian success. The ‘Hanseatische Brauerei’ and the ‘Hansa-Sporthaus Warnow-Park’ sponsored food, drinks and sports equipment.

The German Navy was one of the crowd pullers at the Hanse Sail 2011
One of the crowd pullers of the 21. Hanse Sail was the German Navy in this year again. The Navy ‘was on board’ with its ships and events. It offered ship visits, days of open base and many performances. On three locations the Navy was present and open for thousands of visitors. The ‘Gorch Fock’ was situated at the passenger quay Warnemünde and counted in three days 13.259 spectators, the frigate ‘Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’ was near and welcomed on one day 2.600 visitors. Open-Ship was in Rostock’s city harbour, too. There 2.400 visitors were on the speedboat ‘S72 Puma’. The base Hohe Düne rounded off the visitor opportunities at the Navy as part of the impressive big event. The German Navy gives the chance to talk to inhabitants and get future young people interested in the workplace Navy. After the omission of the compulsory military service, this is an important task and field of public relations. Nor only her in Northern Germany the people value and respect their Navy.

Opinions of the Hanse Sail
‚I come from Neustadt am Rennsteig and do not miss a Sail in Rostock. Shantys with powerful lyrics and the strong voices – this is my world’, says Cordula Ammert and agrees with many Sail-guests. Others love rhythmic music, e.g. Margitta Rössel of ‘Luna Tanzatelier – she is a master of belly dance. For 5 years, she trains every Tuesday, because she ‘likes the Oriental culture and music.’ The audience is excited when they see the group of talented women. In civil life, she is a police officer. Random, Günther Paulus works for the police, too. He comes from Koblenz, does holiday at the coast and came to Rostock only to see the Sail. Handsome Nele Mewies had to go to the Sail as well. The woman from Rostock sells Dom Kölsch. ‘The rainy days were bad. But with THIS sunshine…’ This one, family Kuhtz from Beelitz like also. ‘Our house is full of water’, groans Manfred Kuhtz and his wife. ‘But we are here to do something else. We do not want to see water anymore, but the ships are great and the market mile is varied.’

Two winners at the 1. Baltic Sail Nations Cup
Germany and Poland tie for first place at the 1. Baltic Nations Cup. In total, nine races between teams from Lithuania, Poland and Germany finally had a right result. The teams competed in three, so-called Round Robins (everybody against everybody). On Friday, the German team won all its races. In a close race between Poland and Germany, Poland finally won. Because of a weak wind, the planned final races were cancelled. Therefore, Poland won and Germany earned the challenge cup. Lithuania was on the second place. Poland is allowed to take the challenging cup, in the hope to do further races in other cities of the Baltic Sail in the future, e.g. in Gdansk.
